They use automated playing programmes or “bots” as they are called. And those “bots” are very very good at what they are programmed to do!
Saying that, I don’t let it bother me. It makes no difference to my goals in the tournament as the level at which I am playing I am fairly confident that people are NOT using bots, as the teams that are scoring around about where my team is scoring are all very close. So that means to me that either everyone is using bots ( HIGHLY unlikely) or that only those teams with extraordinary unrealistic scores are using bots (MORE likely).
My team still earns 9 gold ribbons every tournament, and we thoroughly enjoy the whole process.
So ignore them – they are the minority – the thought processes behind why they even do it in the first place is a complete mystery to me.
The only thing that irritates me about the use of “bots” is that Pogo states quite clearly that it is against the TOS to do so, and yet despite countless complaints from everyone else in the tournaments – they do NOTHING about it. That is particularly so since Bret left – he was very on the ball about it and threw teams out if there was even a sniff of bot use, but the new management doesnt care, or perhaps doesn’t even understand what we are talking about. Probably the latter.
To Moms – interestingly enough those whose profiles are open (not many) on the teams that are obviously using bots do NOT buy badges and have very few badges – only rank badges where they have ranked out in say Word Whomp in a week ( which says it all!)
All the teams I have been on, apart from my current one, have had hosts that used auto programs. One claimed to have a very busy life caring for a fragile parent, an active job, etc etc,, yet her scores racked up like magic. She would go into private mode for the tournament games and then into public mode for other games. She set autos for hours on end and kept the speed down to make it look as if she was playing the games. I kept changing teams until I found a completely honest one. What is the point of cheating for something that doesn’t really exist? Beats me. There must be something missing in their lives.
They are cheating, plain and simple.
That’s why my team doesn’t even try for the gold.

It is sad that Pogo doesn’t do anything about it. It probably has to do with money, maybe the bot people spend lots on badges…..lol

Well the only thing left is laziness on their (Pogo) part. And it wouldn’t take much work to figure out who the cheaters were.

There are cheaters in all the tournament games so do just what you want and let them enjoy a useless goal. No think, no brain!
