Java is a mess right now, and Oracle is a mess right now. If you go to their site to download or update Java, it will tell you to download Java 8.25, which is still in Beta Testing, and still will not work with WCS and possibly some other Pogo games. If you use the Update link from the Java Control Panel it will take you to download Java 7u71 in most cases, but in others, it will take you to the Java 8 download. If you Do get the Java 7u71 update download and use the online installer, when it gets to the “Verify Java” page after installing Java 7u71, it will tell you that your Java is out of date and you ned Java 8.25. Right after you installed Java 7u71. The Oracle/Java site is a complete mess, as is Oracle right now, IMHO.

If you downloaded and installed Java 8.25, you need to completely uninstall it from your computer, run CCleaner or a disk cleaner program, and reboot your computer to remove Java 8 altogether. (If you did not download and install Java 8.25- lucky you! You can skip this step).

Once your computer is turned back on (or start here if you are just upgrading from java 7u67 to Java 7u71)
Go to the OFFLINE installer Java download page here:
https://www.java.com/en/download/manual_java7.jsp

Choose the version (marked offline for Windows) that applies to the browser you use. Even if you have a Windows 64 bit OS, 32 bit browsers, including IE, are default for windows. Most people will need the Windows 32 bit Java version. 64 bit browser users will need the 64 bit Windows Java version.

Download the file from the link. DO NOT INSTALL IT while you are online. Save it to your downloads folder and close out any and all open browsers you have. Then go to your downloads folder and either find the jre-7u71-… file (or sort date modified/downloaded and it should be at the top). Double click the file to open the installer and run it. After it installs, do NOT use the Verify Java at the end of the installation,. It will take you to the glitched Verify Java page, which will tell you you need Java 8.25, which swill unistall the Java 7u71 update you just installed.

Close the Java installer and reboot your computer. After your computer is turned back on and running again, THEN you can go tot he Java website and use the Verify Java tool on the left side menu on the download page, or from the “Do I have Java” link on the Java homepage (near the bottom of the page). After running the Verify Java tool you should have a screen that looks like the one in this screenshot (from my computer):
http://i61.tinypic.com/spiuyq.png

You should be good to go if that is what you see. Does not hurt to check that the “Enable Java content i the browser” box is checked on the Java Control Panel Security tab, and that on the Java tab click “view” and make sure under the user tab it shows Java 1.7.0_71 with a check marl to the far right. If you have to check either one, be sure to click the “Apply” button at the bottom right of the JCP. If both are already checked but the “Apply” button has black text (not grayed out), make sure you click it. If that button has black text, it means that a change has not been hard set. I should be grayed out if all Java changes and updates are hard set into the program.

Now, I have to go beat my head against a wall Thanks to the mess Oracle has once again made of what should have been a simple Java critical update download and install. I’ll be HAPPY when Pogo converts everything to Flash, even if remain a Java developer. SIGH.

Janice – You may be getting offered Java 8 b/c of your business and the options you have on your computer that normal people do not have.

I did NOT get offered Java 8 on either of my computers. I got offered 7.71

BattyJanice replied 8 years ago

No Suz, alot of people are getting offered Java 8 if they go to the Java site and click the Free Download button, some are getting it from their JCP auto-update link, and others are not. It’s apparently another random (or seemingly random) Oracle glitch fest. I got it from the auto updater link in my JCP on this computer, but not on my other computers which are all networked and sync’ed together when they are on. I was able to install 7u71 by going to the offline download page directly. Which is why I posted it here so others could find it. Java does not make it easy to find on their site. I will not use the auto-updater again, ever, now that I see it is affected by Oracles glitches. I’ll just go directly to the offline installer page. There is one for Java 8, and I have tit bookmarked for when Java 8 actually comes out of Beta (which it still is in…Beta that is).

MomsBassetHound replied 8 years ago

Janice – Well then I feel lucky :) I know not to take the Java 8 so I would have declined taking the update.

BattyJanice replied 8 years ago

Oracle has always made Beta and pre-release versions and updates available for download on their site a few month prior to general release. But it used to be that you had to know where to go to find the Early Release page to download them. Developers and other computer geeks all knew where to go, but it was fairly hard for general end-user to find it. But they NEVER had Early Release versions or updates linked to their Free download button on the homepage, or accessed from the auto updater in the JCP.

Honestly Suz, I am ready to send hate mail by the bagful and hate e-mail by the thousands to Oracle over this huge flub. My Pogo inbox has been filled with help requests all day, my private e-mail inbox has been flooded, my cell phone is being bombed with people i know calling asking about this, and my head is about to explode. SIGH. I love to help, but it’s Badge Day! And I am still trying to convince myself I am ready to play Yahtzee Party. Lol! I may just have to go into complete hiding and not look at Pogo mail, BH, BH Q & A and e-mail. And my phones have both been put on silent so no more ringing.

“We are sorry, but the party you are trying to reach is currently unavailable. Please leave a message after the tone…”

Janice,, I went to do java also on badge day and when I went there I was also offered the 8 version it was the only 1 on that page but with the help of moms I did what she told me and I got the right 1, I did it through the control panel which I never did before but with moms simple language I did it cause she has the same kind of computer set up as me ( oh so lucky) but 1 thing I don’t know how to do it clean my java I am scared to touch anything in there. this time I wrote it down so I wont be bothering moms . I am not very smart with all this computer stuff and right now there is so much going on with family illness it hard to do any thing .

MomsBassetHound replied 8 years ago

Cody – Go to your Control Panel and click on Java. That will bring up a large box. Click on Settings right there on the general tab. That will open up a smaller box. Click on delete files. That will bring up a smaller square box. The top 2 options should be checked. Click on okay. When that small square box disappears your java cache has been emptied. Just click ok on the other boxes, they will close, and you are done.

I am in the process of deleting and re-installing Java I was prompted to get the Java 8u25 which I did and am now following instructions from batty janice to remedy this issue. But, I have another problem..it is with java flash which I was told to upgrade which I did but now having problems. I did notice that the upgrade is exactly the same for IE and Chrome which in the past has been 2 different ones?
batty janice what should I do about this? Any help with this will be very much appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance.

MomsBassetHound replied 8 years ago

First, java and flash are 2 different things….totally. I think you just typed it the way you did by mistake, we all make them :)

If you are talking about the Flash update it always was the same for all browsers until recently. The version you should have is 15.0.0.189

Janice has a family emergency and may not be on as much for a couple of days. If it’s something I can’t answer myself I can call her.

BattyJanice replied 8 years ago

I’m here! But only for a few minutes before I have to go run errands and go to the store.

TMW- Flash recently has had different versions for different browsers. Not a typical thing, but security holes in Flash (yes, Flash has security issues to) have been the reason for the different versions. Different browsers use different types of plug ins for Flash while Java only has 1 type of plug in for every Java enabled browser and device or machine. The current Flash for all browsers (except 2 capped at version 11) is 15.0.0.189.

What problems are you having? Maybe starting a new thread would b best so this one does not get too long and hard to follow. I’ll check back here when I am back this evening, and I’ll check first thing tomorrow. But I need to know exactly what problem(s) you are experiencing.

TMW replied 8 years ago

No problems anymore since fixing java as you instructed. All is running fine. I guess I just thought I was having problems with flash because of the problems with Java like you mentioned.
Thank you so very much Janice and Moms for all of your help and all that you do.

BattyJanice replied 8 years ago

TMV-
You are very welcome! Glad and very relieved you got Java working and there was no problem with Flash!

And just a note to anyone else having problems with Java on Google Chrome-

when I updted Java to 7u71, the first time I tried to play a game on Chrome I got the Pogo error report that java could not load. The new Chrome changed what types and versions of certain scripts are allowed to run. And Java did not automatically enable itself in Chrome, even with the correct boxes checked in the JCP. I had to check the Chrome plug ins and manually enable both Java plug ins. If you use Chrome, and find that Java games won;t load after updating to Java 7u71, open a new tab on Chrome and type chrome://plugins into the address bar. That opens up the Chrome plug ins page. Scroll down the list and find the Java plug ins. Make sure it says enabled at the bottom left, and check the always allow box to the on the right bottom. Then close Chrome completely and relaunch.

sorry I forgot to put that in my original post. Been a long couple of days with this Java mess and my family emergency. Hopefully everyone is able to get the Java 7u71 update installed and enabled. If anyone has problems, let me know. I’ll check in when I can to see if anyone needs help, but may not be on as much as I usually am for a few days.
