Rank progress is awarded in Canasta by being dealt or drawing RED 3′s. Canasta is an incredibly long game in terms of ranking. It has 100 ranks, 10 rank badges, and you need a whopping 26,000 Red 3′s to rank out! This is certainly a gut-it-out game in terms of ranks.

To maximize the amount of red 3′s you receive, you should play in 4-player games because you get credit for Red 3′s in your partner’s hand as well as yours. Plus, more cards are dealt out initially (if you count you and your partner’s hands) than a 2-player game (only your hand).

One method is to permanently freeze the pile (under game options) and select two Canastas to meld out. That way, if the red 3′s are at the bottom of the deck, the entire 108 cards can usually be drawn before the bots can meld out. You don’t have to worry about your discards when the pile is frozen. That way, the bot can’t pick up the pile an meld out before all of the Red 3′s are drawn. Once all four of the Red 3′s are drawn, try to meld out as quickly as possible.

Another method is to play a 4-player game against the bots: Allow the pile to be picked up with only one Canasta required to meld out AND try to lose. This way, the bots will be picking up the pile and always winning the game, but you will play many more hands and getting the initial deal-out many more times.

It is up to you on how you feel is the best way to maximize your Red 3′s. Canasta also makes for a great multitasking game. You can keep drawing cards and piling up the Red 3′s without paying any attention to the actual game.
