Every year, Pogo puts out (via Ms. Netiquette) a guide to commonly-used chat abbreviations, aka the “Player’s Guide to Netspeak”. This year, as with every year, it lists not only the common but the obscure, the downright useless and the game-specific. It’s a pretty comprehensive list for Pogo’s chatrooms — including a lot we’ve never seen before in our many multitudes of hours on Pogo — even if it is totally sanitized. (Who the heck ever uses LFMBO? Ms. Net apparently. She’s such a pain in the appendix.)
We’d always hoped the year would come where STFU would be added on to the list, but apparently nobody could come up with a saccharine-sweet word for F. *snicker*

If you’re interested in all of the latest Scrabble news, check out Scrabble Central. Pogo’s created this special page to highlight the latest news, events, and National Scrabble Association information. Also, each week they’ll be giving out Scrabble tips to improve your game. Scrabble addicts are going to want to bookmark this page and visit it often!
This week’s Scrabble tips:
Use the Premium Squares. Where you play is often more important than what you play. The 8 triple word scoresquares are often the most important areas of the board. Use them first, or your opponents will! When you have a high-scoring letter such as J, Q, X, or Z, try to place it on a triple letter or double letter score square!
Look for word beginnings and endings! Look in your rack for certain letters that can become beginnings and endings for lots of different words. Common beginnings: pre, tri, con Common endings: ing, ion, er
Length doesn’t matter! A long word is not always a high-scoring word. The point values of the individual letters and the premium squares usually have a bigger impact on your score than the length of the word. The word ZA, for example, often gives you more points than a longer word like ANTLER, since the Z alone is worth 10 points!
Choose Your Skill Level! If you decide to play against a computer opponent, you can choose the skill level that you prefer by selecting one of the 6 “tabs” on the Room Selector web page. If you’d like the computer opponent’s skill level to be at the beginner level, choose the Social or Beginner tabs. On the Intermediate tab, the computer tends to make longer words. On the Advanced and Expert tab, you’ll notice that the computer’s vocabulary is even larger. Try the Master tab for the ultimate challenge — the computer’s vocabulary is immense, and it tends to make very long words!

Pogo’s graphic artists have been busy creating an animated daschund, poodle, boxer, shih-tzu, and schnauzer; as well as a static basket of puppies for dog loving minis! For the cat lovers, there will be animations: stretching siamese, a tuxedo cat playing with a butterfly, and a persian and her mousie toy; and there will be a static basket of kittens as well. There will also be a cockatiel, a canary, and a couple fishtanks. And to round out the collection, there will be a background image featuring dogs and their owners playing in the front lawn of the Pogo Pet Adoption Center at the corner of Pogo Way. How idyllic!

Those of you who were planning on playing the UK Playfest in Poppit, there’s been an update from Pogo UK:
“We are currently experiencing an unforeseen issue with our Pogo UK Summer Sizzler Playfest. As a result, you may encounter unexpected warning messages in the chat window. We are currently investigating the issue as a matter of utmost urgency and will run another update as soon as more information is available. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”
We didn’t experience any problems, but other users have reported not getting credit for their super pops or tokens for their first super pop; you might want to wait until the problems are sorted out — maybe tomorrow — before trying again. For the US folks who are ineligible to win prizes in the Playfest, just get one super pop in Poppit to earn your 5,000 tokens. The Playfest ends on Monday, so you’ve got plenty of time.
Update: July 17, Summer Sizzler UK Playfest now open!
