Tuesday Tips Day: Blackjack Carnival

by Lura on July 20, 2010 · 28 comments

Blackjack Carnival (thumbnail)It’s Tuesday again and that means it’s Tips Day! Each Tuesday we’ll be showcasing one of Pogo.com’s games and collecting your tips, insights, and hints for playing the games, earning more tokens in them, and earning their badges more easily.

This week’s game is Blackjack Carnival. There are 50 Blackjack Carnival ranks and 5 badges you can earn in-game as you rank up. The premium, weekly, and mix-n-match challenges for this game are usually:

* Win X “Pair Square” Side Bets
* Win X “Royal Match” Side Bets
* Win 7 “Super 7″ Side Bets
* Get X Blackjacks

For ranking up, our tips for Blackjack Carnival suggest you play it as a slots game; that is, just click to keep the deals coming regardless of what cards you have. Keep your mouse cursor over the STAND button and click away.

Do you have your own tips for playing this game? Do you have tricks for ranking up, earning the most tokens, or earning the types of badges listed above? Share them with other Pogo fans in a comment below. Thanks!

Hi all,
Well I only have one tip for winning some tokens,as this game is notorious for losing tokens if you bet the maximum amount all the time.So I always bet the minimum amount unless there is a large amount on face cards(tens) in the deck. You can tell how many tens left in the deck by moving ur mouse over the deck and it will show u how many 10s left in the deck.So if you have a high percentage of 10s left,I up my bet to maximum bet until the percentage of 10s drops, and thus less chance of getting 2 10s dealt to you.Having said that, the odds are you will still lose tokens in this game, unless you employ Luras tips about betting min all the time and making tokens from the jackpot spins.

I ranked out on the game a very long time ago, but I bet 50 a hand and did the Royal Match. All I did was play like I would had I been in a casino. The Royal Match and JP spins make up for a lot of losses and I managed to come out ahead most days.

I enjoyed playing that game and wish they would add more ranks :)

catania1966: the ‘playing like slots’ tip/guide on the Blackjack Carnival ranks page was written and submitted by Joe; I never would have thought of it in a million years! Just giving credit where credit is due. :)

Some days you can lose 10,000, some days you can win 10,000. LOL After I got to rank 30 , I bet the minimum and played Pair Square. If I did not get a blackjack on the first two cards, stand , wait until next hand. Just kept clicking and watched football games. LOL Came out ahead every time I played that way and ranked out faster.

The Side Bets, Just like in real life, Are tilted way in the houses favor and I do not play them unless there is a specific badge thats says so. I usually play blackjack with standard strategy including never taking insurance. Not much else to add but I can count without the benefit of the side screen so I think it is very easy.

I used to play this game every night before I went to bed. I would leave my usual game and friends and tell them I had an appointment with a dealer…

I always play it to win it and always bet the royal match. That being said I usually lose a lot of tokens or just break even. It takes a long time to rank up in this game.

I may have to start playing again and use Joe’s tips and see if I have better progress. I am really enjoying the Tuesday Tips Day Lura, thanks.

I stand on 11 or more no matter what dealer has. That game makes everyone lose. Splitting cards made no sense to me as 1 always won and the other lost. Seems to me the jp spin gives tokens commensurate with the amount you’ve been betting. GL to those who still have to play that game

This game was one I never thought I’d rank out in. Waiting for blackjacks to come up is very similar to playing Ali Baba or Sock Hop or Monopoly Slots and waiting for the genie/duck/dice to come up. Frustrating! (if you’re staring at the screen) Then I started playing these games when a baseball game was on and not paying attention to the game screen at all. I quickly ranked out on all of these games… it really worked for me.

I’m quickly running out of “multi-taksing” games and I love to have them available for when I’m watching a game or a movie. Please keep posting your tips on ranking every Tuesday. I’m sure there’s lots that we haven’t thought of.

Thanks Lura!

Booboo2 (#5): In real life, they’re tilted in the house’s favor, but it’s not so with this game. The pair square side bet is the best side bet to pick. On average, you gain about 0.88 tokens/hand on the pair square side bet, and only 0.43 tokens/hand on the royal match and lucky sevens side bets.

Also, here’s a tip on using insurance: scroll over the deck, and add 1 to the number of cards in the deck (because it doesn’t include the dealer’s face-down card). If the number of cards in the deck is less than 3x the number of tens in the deck, then go for it; otherwise, stay away from it.

Having been a dealer in Atlantic City for many years I have one thing to say about insurance….do NOT take insurance unless you have a blackjack. The casinos (in real life & Pogo) never offer anything that isn’t going to make them money, or tokens.

Boohoo #5. You should play one of the side bets all the time. It is just free “money” because it doesn’t cost you ANYTHING to play the side bets.

12 Tom July 20, 2010 at 3:19 pm

Interesting slots strategy. The idea of NOT hitting when you’re dealt less than 12 just wouldn’t occur to me but it does make some sense especially to rank up.

Regarding the side bets, I dusted out my Prob & Stats part of my brain and the Pair Square is in the players favor because the odds of being dealt a pair is 1 in 17 (3 in 51, specifically) but pays out 20 to 1 (100 for 5).
The other 2 are also in the players favor but not as much. A pair of 7′s occurs 1 in 221 deals on average (pays 240 to 1) and the Royal Match occurs 2 in 221 deals (pays 120 to 1) but it can be very frustrating losing all those tokens until you get lucky with those 2 so I prefer the Pair Square bet which keeps me around even until the JP spins come in.

One other tip I’d mention for ranking up which is something you should NEVER do if you’re betting real $$$ is to split a pair of face cards which gives you a couple of extra chances of picking up a BJ.

Thanks, Lura, for this great site and goodluck everyone!

Faith – It costs 5 tokens per hand to play any of the side bets.

Here’s a really GREAT tip about insurance that no one seems to have mentioned or possibly not know. This game has a bit of a “tell” when it comes to insurance and the dealer having BJ. If the dealer has an ACE showing and the graphic next to his card shows “1 or 11″, the dealer DOES NOT have BJ. Do Not take the insurance. If the graphic shows “11″, the dealer HAS BJ. Take the insurance and save yourself some tokens :)

I love to play blackjack, go to Vegas quite often. That said, I’d rather play casino island bj than bj carnival. Casino Isl. pays out better. BJ Carnivals lousy payouts, & difficulty to rank in (needing to wait for BJ’s), leads me away from this game, allthough I am somewhere in the 20′s rank-wise. Another reason I don’t like this game, is that they took away one of my all-time faves, Buckaroo Blackjack, to make way for Carnival. This is an ok game, but in moderation, or multi-tasking, as Joe mentioned.

Wow Suz….I didn’t know that….thanks for info.

17 MomsBassetHound July 20, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Tom – Even if you split face cards and get an ace it is not considered a blackjack. To be considered a blackjack it has to be the first 2 cards dealt to you.

Suz

18 Joe July 20, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Tom #12 – If you split aces or tens and receive a BJ through a split, it will not count towards your rank progress. If you’re only concerned with ranking, it’s best to just stand on everything.

19 Syrinx 2112 July 20, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Hello, I was reading the tips on how to rank up quickly and found something was not right? It said it only uses a single deck with 4 aces. that’s not true. As I was playing the other day me and 2 bots. the bot ahead of me was dealt 2 aces and the dealer had an ace. the bot split the aces and ended up with 5 split hands with aces. there were multiples of clubs and spades. There were 6 aces showing total. A few hands ( I think 3 times) after that more aces came up as well. So that means when 4 aces are played that they are not spent for a while til a reshuffle/reload isn’t really true.

20 Lura July 20, 2010 at 6:59 pm

Syrinx 2112: are you thinking of Casino Island Blackjack? This one isn’t multiplayer.

21 Syrinx 2112 July 20, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Opps (*_*) at least they’re both card games lol

22 WilliamPorygon July 20, 2010 at 8:40 pm

Tom (#12) is right. I did the math on the odds of winning the side bets, and Pair Square is the best one in the long run (overall, you should win Pair Square 13 times for 1300 tokens in the same amount of hands it should take to win Royal Match twice or Super Sevens once, each of which yields 1200 tokens).

23 mspatmac July 20, 2010 at 9:29 pm

My interest was peaked by the comments so thought I would check and see where I was on the game. I was rank 19 with 8 more spins to get to 20 and a badge. Just couldn’t resist that! I started out hitting stand on every game and betting low. It sure got boring.

1/2 through my quest I played normally, including betting the 7′s. The game went almost as fast and while I lost tokens on the hands more than made up in 7′s and jp. Ended with the badge and over 5,000 tokens.

Not scientific at all but I got more bj playing normally and betting 50 and the game, while very frustrating, was at least bearable..No dealer is that lucky. Didn’t take much brain power and I still watched a movie at the same time. I will only play again if there is a challenge because you know my pogo motto is play what you like and like what you play, unless it’s a weekly of course.

FrancisW #14, that’s a great tip! It’d be nice if a real dealer had such as easy tell. This is the only time that insurance is actually worth it.

Suz #17 & Joe #18, thanks for correcting me. After I did some more testing (checking out the above mentioned tell) I did notice that after splitting Aces and getting 2 BJs that they didn’t count and I didn’t even get the 50% token bonus!
That’s a lousy house rule for this game!

So to revise my #12 post, scrap splitting face cards and even splitting Aces doesn’t seem to make sense with this rule even though it should be automatic with almost every other BlackJack game (including real ones).

Thanks again,

Tom

Lately this game has been very generous. I’ve been getting like 8 spins in a 2hr period. I’ve been telling my hubby to get while the gettings good!

So far, FrancisW’s (#14) tell appears to work! Great tip! :)

27 Sheljin July 23, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Because of this thread, I had to go play some Blackjack Carnival. lollll I definitely wanted to try out FrancisW’s tip #14) and I can also confirm that it works GREAT. 100% effective. Thanks, Francis! I love these kinds of awesome tips we find at BH!

I have to say, tho, that the game seemed just as frustrating to me as in the past. I love blackjack, so can’t see spending alot of time NOT playing it, just to rank up. Especially since while I was playing, once again, the dealer gets SO many more blackjacks than me. Even with 2 jackpot spins and playing the Pair Square side bet (AND switching from 50 token bets to 10 token bets halfway thru), I still lost a significant amount of tokens.

I found that things were getting better then longer I played – which is also something I feel I have noticed in the slots/random games (like Roulette). (For instance, I played thru 5 decks before getting ONE blackjack!! But ended up getting 2 jackpot spins before I quit.)

You have to commit to playing for a while for the payouts to turn to your favor, IMO, which might explain why people like Suz & Joe feel they end up coming out ahead more often than not. Sitting to rank out, you have put in the time the game requires to finally start flipping towards your favor.

28 MomsBassetHound July 23, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Shel – You probably are correct. When I’m playing something for ranks I sit and play for hours.

No, not me, I’m not addicted to Pogo….LOL
