Pogo Now Has Forums

October 22, 2009 · 36 comments

Hey forum fans, Pogo’s now got forums of their own! They’ve just announced them, so there isn’t much activity YET, but we suspect things will pick up in a few days (or hours!).

Pogo forums

It’ll be interesting to see how these forums turn out, especially over time after the novelty wears off. Just a few weeks ago, we discussed the possibility of Pogo adding forums in our weekend open thread. Do you all still feel the same way?

What do you think of this? Chime in with your comments below.

The forums are pretty dead right now, but I’m sure they’ll pick up and there will be a small of regular users who will visit several times a day. For me, meh… I will read (so I can dig up information for you guys if needed), but I won’t participate (I have enough questions to answer here). I hope it will alleviate some of the email and comment questions I get about basic Pogo things, but that probably won’t happen.

[There was a whole paragraph here about posting outside links to the forums, but it's not clear yet how they'll be handling that... so I'll reserve my comments for another time.]

To my eyes, this feature doesn’t look like it was quite ready to be rolled out yet. The user interface is very bare-bones and not all that user-friendly. Also, the “skin” of the page is the “Free Pogo” skin, even if you sign into a Club Pogo account.

Just my two cents on the appearance. As for the functionality, it’s a bit early yet to tell, I guess, but this is probably not something I will use.

meh. it could be useful if pogo uses the comments regarding what things we like, don’t like, and would like in the future. otherwise, i already see that they’ve got people who cannot grasp on the concept of staying on topic or recognizing the appropriateness of their comments. unless pogo staff stays on top of that 25/8, weeding through those threads post-by-inane-post will be a chore and i guarantee that most people will never read the previous posts. and we all know how that goes LMAO.

i also can’t see the sense of talking about food, television, et al, on pogo. but some may like that sort of thing, so there you go.

Oh, I am definitely not a fan of this idea. Though I love forums, I’m just not sure *this* particular forum is a good idea. I think, though the money for Pogo might be in moving towards a more social site, I do believe they might lose people who are indecisive about keeping their membership in these tougher economical times.

Personally, Pogo should stick to the games and leave the people to find their social networking sites as they please.

*Sigh*. I’m not a big fan when it comes to forum rooms w/Pogo. I just foresee mudslinging, name calling and constant complaining. I dunno, I guess I’ll check it out and read what others are posting, but I don’t plan on being an active participant in their forums.

Do we know if anyone can post or just CLUB POGO members?

Without the link above I can’t even find how to get to the forums yet, so as long as the forums don’t affect my pages loading and/or game play, I couldn’t care less. I won’t be using them & those that will be using them can be happy :)

8 kiki October 22, 2009 at 5:14 pm

the forum link is on both club and free sites, so it’s open to one and all.

(please decline this if dawnie’s question has already been answered. :) )

Quote from message 5:
mudslinging, name calling and constant complaining

Just another day in pogo lmao!!

The pogo forum looks bland and boring. Signatures and avatars would surely add something to look at. I think people mainly like forums for the early info they provide, and since pogo isn’t likely going to go for that, I see it falling flat in no time. Unless kiki starts posting …. she’s always a worthwhile read!!

10 kiki October 22, 2009 at 5:22 pm

you can find the link to the Games Forum down at the very end of both the club and free pages–the club is just to the right of the blue EA circle and the free is just about center bottom; both are pretty small links and you might miss them if you weren’t searching for them. no doubt they will add a big blazing neon tab for our ease of use.

11 Lura October 22, 2009 at 5:25 pm

kiki: you know what’s funny? Today I found out the link to the forums has been in the footer for 5 whole days already! :) Cracks me up that hardly anyone found it!

Pogogirl, sandy z: bland and boring yes, but it matches most of EA’s other game forums. I’m sure they’ll find a way to re-skin it with pizazz (and jazz hands?!) in the future.

Personally myself, I would like to be able to create a completely separate ID for the Pogo forums. I don’t know that I’m really that crazy about posting on the open Pogo forums using my real Pogo ID and with the forum profile being a link to my real Pogo profile. I don’t want anyone who disagrees with a post I make or that I might unknowingly make angry on the forums sending me a ton of nasty guestbook entries that I’ll have to sift through to decline or stumbling across me in a chat room and starting something there.

I’m going to have to see how things shape up with the Pogo forums before I absolutely decide whether I love them or hate them. Hopefully, things will go smoothly and stay civil! lol

13 Serena October 22, 2009 at 5:59 pm

I have mixed feelings on the whole idea, to be honest. I’ll probably mostly be lurking there – and, if I ever do post, I might use an alternate account.

I am interested in seeing what other people say about my favourite games, though – as well as the ones I don’t care so much for.

I hope they manage to curb things like political and religious debates, though. The flame wars that result over those two subjects often turn very nasty.

The bottom line is, it is too early to say if I like the forum idea or not. I don’t like to dismiss ideas or concepts without giving them a chance.

I’m usually not very sociable at Pogo, though. If it’s a game where you gift other players tokens, I’ll usually say “thank you for tokens” – or, occasionally, I might say “way to go”. Or, if someone says “way to go” to me, I’ll usually say “thank you”. That’s usually the extent of it, though.

14 Kathy October 22, 2009 at 6:00 pm

I am glad pogo is doing things so that people can give more gifts to other people but i think pogo should set up something so that people can also give gems as gift. there has been times when people want to help there friends get gems and can’t because pogo does not have it set up as being able to give gems as a gift. Please think about setting something up so that we can give gems to other people as gifts. thanks keep up all the good things you are doing on pogo.

Well what a surprise…..not!!
Pogo releasing something that is only available (at time of typing this) by logging into the US side!
I have complained before to Pogo about the US site getting things that the UK site gets either later or not at all and was basically told that the US and UK site get things at exactly the same time. My butt they do!!
Maybe the UK site was/is never intended to have the Forums, I don’t know, I don’t see why not…we pay too!

Rant over…lol

Jennifer. I agree with you in that if I ever posted on the Games Forum I wouldn’t use my regular Club name. I would make a free name and use that solely for posting in the forum so if I upset someone…who me? lol…. they wouldn’t ever find me in a game room.

16 Maxine Tate October 22, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Im with tcfox…I cant find the link either except for on here lol…looked all over the home page…i know im dense but this is rediculous….can anyone help??

17 Lura October 22, 2009 at 7:41 pm

It’s in the footer. Tiny text, reads “Games Forum”. It’s down there with the rest of the stuff that nobody ever reads or looks at because they’re distracted by all the wow! shiny! on the way down. This is seriously an exercise in how to hide content from Pogo users. :)

While I’m here, I’ll just mention I’m having a blast giving low ratings to people who say stupid things and piss me off (and since the site is new, it’s really affecting their starrage). I know, my evil twin would be proud.

18 Maxine Tate October 22, 2009 at 7:54 pm

lol @lura’s comment……..omg Lura…who could even see that if you dont know its there????? You are sooo right… Obviously Pogo doesnt want many people to know about this lol….thanks for the info…I doubt I will ever use it and might even forget where the link is lol

19 Frank October 22, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Ugh! How bland and depressing! This looks like Pogo’s personal cesspool where they can get new ideas in one centralized pot — without having to pay a marketing firm or focus group.

And I totally agree with Lura’s comment about the star ratings. I saw that on forums I used to visit and we used to give thumbs downs to one another for giggles. At one point, I had a -155 rating or something. High school popularity contests, that’s all that really boils down to.

However, I must say that I do agree with one suggestion — UNO would make a wonderful Pogo game. I used to love playing that in grammar school.

I’m suspicious of these forums. You’ll see moderators as Pogo_[Name] but I’m inclined to think that moderators/administrators will eventually start posting under generic names (e.g. BritneyFan3489, 2Kewl4Sk0oL44) in order to fish for responses they wish to have answers to.

I’ll probably visit if I’m really bored — and I’m talking REALLY bored — and want to look at the drama llama running out of the barn if some flame wars or spamming starts.

20 Pam October 22, 2009 at 8:08 pm

you cracked me up & caused me to spit soda on my now soggy keyboard with your ‘evil twin’ thank you for the laugh.
With all the new Pogo/Fake book crap the Editor can protest all he wants that they are not trying to be Face Book.
All I can say is I’m glad I’m on a free ride from Subway because I
will never conceed another dime to Pogo… hey, since Face Book is free & Pogo is trying to be just like them, shouldn’t Pogo go free too?
Thank you to EA for a perfectly obnoxious application, hope your happy when the money stops rolling in… just mho

21 Ban October 22, 2009 at 9:28 pm

I’m rating all the Pogo Employees low lol.

22 EdC October 22, 2009 at 9:49 pm

I think it’s good for newbies who have no clue about fan sites. I’ll probably check it out once in a blue moon but won’t expect any sort of useful information like I get here.

23 EvilQueen October 22, 2009 at 10:52 pm

Just checked them out and can’t even see going to them at all. I just don’t see the point and can only forsee the spam, flaming and such going on left and right at some point if its not moderated well. Hopefully they will moderate it though and keep that stuff off of there as best they can for those that do want to go to the boards often. I just know I won’t be using them. As it is the forums (non-game ones) I belong to now I don’t even bother going to at this point and haven’t for months.
I agree that they really should have set it up so you could use a different name for the forums if you wanted. I can see spam mail in the game becoming a problem from this.

24 goofygoober519 October 22, 2009 at 11:16 pm

If I wanted a Pogo forum, id go to any of the ka-zillion pogo sites out there

25 tami October 23, 2009 at 12:22 am

lura, i posted in the mini section. I want pogo to add State backgrounds for our mini and maybe even something related to our state for a “goodie”. I think that would be really popular if they did it .. we will see, i know you play wow lura, and nothing is worse than the wow gen. forum community but i think the pogo community will be better :)

26 Gecko October 23, 2009 at 12:25 am

After mulling this over a bit and considering the location, I wonder if it isn’t just EA trying to make all their child sites similar… Maybe get to a point where the templates are even the same to make it easier to maintain? I could see a technical help forum being a huge plus, but otherwise Pogo just doesn’t have that feel – I mean, that’s why we have ingame chat and personal messages.

(PS – By “Child Site” I mean those sites that EA owns but are essentially spun off from the parent EA site, sorry for those not familiar with computer programming. I know way too many of those people and the terms slip into my everyday life now!)

27 Kat F. October 23, 2009 at 2:09 am

Just went to check it out…in a “word”—DUD!!!

Never have I EVER seen anything quite as unprofessional as THAT!! For such a huge corporation, raking in the money that they are?? hmmmm??

That will be my one and only visit! :)

If they are so proud of their Forums, seems like they would have ANNOUNCED it FIVE DAYS AGO, huh?

Hope Pogo is proud of what they’ve done to what I once considered a very unique game site.

Sad, sad, sad!!

(((Hugs to ALL)))

28 MagicFanUK October 23, 2009 at 4:15 am

Hi all,
How come we in the UK have not got this forum? (not that i would use it lol ) Do the French & German Pogo sites have it or is it just us Brits missing out? We all pay to play on pogo so we should all get the same facilities me thinks!!!
thanks for a great site Lura

29 HomelessDog October 23, 2009 at 11:51 am

BTW, I noticed that they already filter our mentions of other fan sites like this one. So don’t try redirecting people here.

And they will delete any posts mentioning glitches or cheats.

30 Lura October 23, 2009 at 11:52 am

HomelessDog: interesting. I was told yesterday — by a Pogo employee — that while they weren’t sure how it was going to play out, they didn’t see why BadgeHungry would be censored. That’s too bad. I’ve already seen a few references to other fan sites across the forums, I wonder if they’d like help adding to their censor filters. *lol*

Oh well, I’m sure if anyone wants to point someone to something on this site, they can always tell people to Google whatever they need. I’ve seen posts that do that already.

31 HomelessDog October 23, 2009 at 11:55 am

That is true. I don’t think the filters were in place yesterday morning, but today I’m noticing the word POGO in all caps whenever it looks like someone has referenced a different fan site.

32 Lura October 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm

HomelessDog: you have got to be kidding me! I am going to keep my mouth shut here, but let me just say that kind of re-writing censorship is one of the very few things that boils my blood about some other fan forums. I had thought Pogo would be above that kind of childish behavior. *shakes head*

33 Another Susan October 23, 2009 at 1:15 pm

I hope they are giving the moderators a bonus for having to read all those posts. I have a feeling once the word gets out to the general Pogo population that the forums exists there could be some heavy censorship happening. Pogo cant even keep the ones offering free tokens at xxx… out of chat.

The way it is set up now remind me of the beginning days of forums. Some of those were fun to read with all the flame wars (or whatever they call it these days) going on.

I certainly wont be posting, but if I wanted to I would just go set up a free account and do my posting from there. ;-

34 scott October 23, 2009 at 4:53 pm

i dont really see anything wrong with pogo having its own forum. actually i am surprised its just now happening. i would have thought it would kind of been a normal thing to do. for instance, when i 1st heard of these fan site like badgehungry and others and saw they had forums i wondered why pogo didnt have 1 to begin with? i think its a little late(better late than never tho) in coming, but i do understand why they now see the need for 1… they will have a lot of work to so with it and see some additions to it as time goes by. however i do not believe it is that bad of an idea. if pogo had a forum long ago. (when most here have been a member either free or club for a while now. i dont think it would be an issue and would still have many of these fans sites that we enjoy as well.. so lets call this my 2 cents worth. lol

35 Melissa October 24, 2009 at 3:55 am

I’ll only go if I am needing some help on something, otherwise I am going to stick to the fan sites/blogs that I frequent.

36 Lisa October 26, 2009 at 3:26 pm

I totally agree with Melissa.
